JONES WARD PLC hip replacement lawyer Larry Jones discusses the Biomet Magnum Hip Implant and the implications of failures being reported from the field. This is yet another metal-on-metal hip implant that appears to have failed miserably despite Biomet's promises about the stability of the hip implant system. Fortunately, hip replacement attorneys across the country are watching closely and investigating hip implant failures such as these. I expect that we will start seeing hip replacement lawyers filing lawsuits any day now. Why? Because that's the only way the companies pay attention and put safer products on the market.
Biomet's M2a-Magnum hip features an all-metal (or metal-on-metal) design. The M2a-Magnum hip was approved by the federal FDA in 2004. Since that time, all metal-on-metal hip implants have been under careful scrutiny by both the FDA and the medical community because of their links to a wide range of problems including severe pain, popping, grinding, bone death and metallosis. I dare say that any doctor who implants a metal-on-metal device today is committing medical malpractice. Even an overwhelming majority of a panel of orthopedic surgeons gather in San Francisco for their annual conference agreed that MOM hip implants should NOT be implanted given the recent post-market surveillance.
So what are the problems With the Biomet Magnum Hip Implants?
Like the now-recalled DePuy ASR hip, the Biomet M2a-Magnum hip is made up of a metal femoral head and a metal acetabular cup. The artificial hips are made in part of chromium and cobalt. When the metal-on-metal components of the artificial hip implants rub together, the friction causes tiny particle of metal to shave off and enter into the surrounding blood and tissue. These metal particles can cause pain, joint and tissue damage, bone death and metal poisoning or metallosis. Patients with a Magnum artificial hip implant may notice things such as pain, grinding, popping, and squeaking of the implant. Biomet Magnum patients may also be subject to dislocations and infections, leading to revision surgeries or replacement of the artificial hips.
So is this the next DePuy ASR recall? We don't know whether it will get that far or not. There are a lot of Biomet Magnum customers who have failed artificial hips. Perhaps some lawsuits by competent and experienced artificial hip replacement lawyers will force Biomet to recall the Magnum hip implants. One thing is for sure, their product is so dangerous that no competent doctor would install the Magnum MOM artificial hip today, or at least that's my opinion.
A recent medical study published in a respected medical journal looked at data from 185 patients who received a large-diameter femoral head metal-on-metal hip implant or artificial hip. These medical researchers found that the failure rate was as high as 15 percent, with many of the artificial hip implants failing within the first three to five years. This is directly contradictory to what Biomet, DePuy and many other artificial hip makers have told doctors and patients. These hip implants are supposed to last 15-20 years on average. There is simply no excuse for these early hip failures.
