Toyota Again Recalls RAV4s, Highlanders

April 25, 2011, by Jasper Ward

Embattled automaker Toyota again recalled some of their cars last week. This recall covers 308,000 RAV4s and Highlanders because side curtain airbags can deploy under certain conditions.

More than 214,000 RAV4s and 94,000 Highlanders are being recalled. The recall will replace the assembly for the airbag sensor. The years covered are 2007 and 2008 RAV4s and some 2008 Highlander and Highlander HVs, which have a roll-sensing curtain airbag system that has two sensors designed to detect the vehicle's roll angle.

According to Toyota, one of the sensors can fail, the airbag warning light can come on and the roll-detection system will turn off, but the airbag will still function during a side collision. However, if both sensors fail simultaneously after the first airbag system check, the seat belt pretensioner and the curtain shield airbag could be deployed.

Yaz, Yasmin Studies Show Double Gallbladder, Clot Risk

April 22, 2011, by Jasper Ward

Recent studies have confirmed that thousands of lawsuits regarding Yaz, Yasmine and Ocella over gallbladder disease, blood clots and heart related trouble have merit.

According to the Canadian Medical Association Journal, a survey of health databases show that the risk to women on Yaz and Yasmin is double that of other birth control drugs of having to have their gallbladder removed. Researchers analyzed a database of more than 2.7 million women who used birth control pills. The analysis showed that newer birth control brands had increased risk of gallbladder disease when compared to previous generations, but that the increased risk of Yaz and Yasmin for gallbladder removal and disease was twice as much as any other.

In addition, a recent study published in the British Medical Journal showed that the risk of blood clotting disorders was twice as much for users of Yaz and Yasmine than other drugs. To make that determination, researchers from the Boston Collaborative Drug Surveillance Program at the BU School of Medicine analyzed about 900 women on birth control since the year 2002. For women taking Yaz or Yasmin, the rate of blood clots was 30.8 per 100,000 person-years. For women talking levonorgestrel-based pills, the rate was only 12.5 per 100,000 person-years.

Birth Defects and Prescription Drugs: Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa and Lexapro

April 14, 2011, by JONES WARD PLC

Widely prescribed depression and anxiety drugs like Paxil, Prozac, Zoloft, Celexa and Lexapro have the dangerous side effect of causing very serious birth defects in children born to mothers who used these drugs during their pregnancy. Sadly, many babies are bing born in this country with very serious heart problems, such as

--atrial septal defects/ventricular septal defects -hole in heart
--hypoplastic heart syndrome
--malformations of mitral and/or tricuspid valves
--persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn

Additionally, serious conditions such as spina bifida, omphalocele, and cleft lip/palate have been traced to these drugs.

It is time for the manufacturers of these drugs to be held liable for their conduct. Their scientists knew or should have known of the impact of increased serotonin levels on the formation of the embryo.

The attorneys of JONES WARD PLC are evaluating birth defect cases caused by SSRI drugs, as well as anti-convulsant and migraine drugs like Topamax and Depakote.
